The biggest disappointment of the evening was the presence of a tip box on the bill at the end of the meal. Which started at 18%.. In a country where tipping is not required or necessary. Nonetheless, We can deal with request for a tip on the bill, but not the training of the employees to remain awkwardly in the room with eyes fixated on how the tip is fulfilled. It was quite the shock to receive this on the bill alone, (again) coupled with having to deal with the awkwardness of the employee standing there to prompt a favorable outcome. This wouldn’t be offered to a Japanese citizen…if we wanted to enjoy a meal that came with an 18% tip we can get that in the states…nobody is traveling to Japan to be billed for a meal like they do in the USA. Won’t be coming back. Employees are great, I assume it’s ownership driving the orchestra at the end. Should probably stick to running restaurants in the states…the Benihana experiment quickly failed there…probably won’t fare much better in Shinjuku.
